South African Government Confirms Death of Bafana Bafana Star Jayden Adams
The South African government has confirmed the passing of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, who was just 25 years old. His death came only a few days after he represented the nation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie expressed his shock, saying, “It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams.”
He added that South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and the nation mourns with his family, teammates, and millions of fans who saw him rise from academy prospect to international star.
Police in Cape Town opened an investigation after the body of a 25‑year‑old man was found at a residence in Schotschekloof, a suburb of central Cape Town, on Saturday morning. Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of death.
McKenzie urged the media and public to exercise restraint and compassion, asking them to refrain from speculation while the family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given privacy. He noted that any official information will be released by the appropriate bodies in due course.
Adams had recently completed an impressive World Cup campaign, featuring in all three of South Africa’s group matches as Bafana Bafana reached the knockout stage for the first time before losing to co‑hosts Canada in the Round of 32.
His World Cup journey was marked by personal heartbreak; he started the 1‑1 draw against the Czech Republic despite learning only hours before kickoff that his grandmother, Marianna, had passed away.
Adams began his senior career at Stellenbosch FC, becoming the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract in 2020. He made 139 appearances before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he helped the Pretoria side win the Betway Premiership and the CAF Champions League.
He also represented South Africa at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, contributing to the team’s bronze medal finish, and earned his senior international debut in 2022.
The South African Football Players Union paid tribute, stating that Jayden had recently carried the nation’s hopes at the 2026 World Cup with pride, courage and distinction. They described his passing as an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and the country.
The union added that South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game, and a young life that still had much to offer.
