Peter Obi May Lose 2023 Strongholds in 2027, ADC Official Warns
Hajiya Naja’atu Muhammad, deputy national chairman (North‑West) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar could have an advantage over President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
She made the remarks during an interview with DCL English, outlining her assessment of the upcoming election and the prospects of major opposition candidates.
According to her, Peter Obi’s support in Lagos State may weaken, and he might not replicate the backing he obtained there in 2023.
former Anambra governor could encounter obstacles in the South‑South region due to the influence of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.
In the South‑East, Obi may struggle to gain votes because of the presence of All Progressives Congress (APC) governors elected in that zone. Additionally, his support in the northern part of the country could decline in the next election. She argued that the evolving political landscape across regions could make it difficult for Obi to preserve the gains he achieved in the previous presidential contest. Quoting her directly: “Peter Obi is going to lose many of the areas he won in the previous election, including Lagos. There are numerous locations where he cannot succeed because, for instance, in the south‑south, Wike is there to limit his success, and in the south‑east, there are powerful APC governors who will restrain his votes.” Doris Ijeoma Israel, an entertainment journalist and graduate of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Lagos, covers film, music and celebrity news.
