Obi Mikel and Ibrahimovic Praise Messi After Argentina’s Comeback Win Over Egypt
Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel expressed astonishment at Lionel Messi’s enduring brilliance after the Argentina skipper inspired a dramatic 3‑2 victory over Egypt in the World Cup 2026 round of 16.
Trailing two‑zero after goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico, Argentina rallied with Messi finding the net, followed by Cristian Romero and Enzo Fernandez to complete the comeback.
Speaking on Fox Sports, Mikel said:
“Argentina is coming through yet another difficult game, where they have been pushed to the limit. How much has Messi played, how much has been taken away from him mentally, psychologically, physically as well.”

He added that the question remains how much more the 39‑year‑old can give to steer Argentina toward another semi‑final, noting that every time it seems finished, Messi produces something spectacular.
Former Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic also lauded Messi but urged the rest of the squad to share the burden as the tournament reaches its decisive stage.
“If I have to be a little bit critical, his teammates need to step it up and also help him because he has been on another level. If he can carry on and bring it all the way to the final, we will not be surprised, but he needs help to be fair.”

Ibrahimovic warned that Argentina cannot rely solely on their captain if they hope to retain the World Cup title.
