Afrobeat legend Femi Kuti has revealed his formula for maintaining relevance throughout his four-decade music career, emphasizing the importance of creating substantial, self-composed music.
The 63-year-old music veteran attributes his enduring success to composing purposeful content. During a recent Afropolitan podcast appearance, Kuti urged emerging artists to develop authentic musical craftsmanship.
Kuti warned that musicians who neglect proper skill development risk fading into obscurity. He cautioned, “Young artists rush to create hits without seeing the danger. When the next generation emerges with their stars, you’ll fade away.”
Kuti’s Advice for Sustainable Careers
When asked about challenges facing Nigeria’s music industry, Kuti responded: “When the head isn’t correct, nothing can be accurate. I appreciate young artists’ work, but what happens at age 50?”
The iconic musician contrasted approaches: “I compose everything myself and maintain rigorous practice. Legends like Miles Davis and Stevie Wonder endure because they work constantly. Young artists buy songs rather than learning.”
Kuti highlighted his cross-generational appeal: “I still tour successfully because fans introduce me to their children and grandchildren. Consistency and substance keep audiences returning for decades.”
He challenged emerging talents: “If you’re not writing your music and just performing energetic shows, can you sustain that at 40? True artistry requires lifelong dedication to craft.”
