Team Nigeria Arrives in Aberdeen for Pre‑Games Camp
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially welcomed Team Nigeria’s athletes and officials to their pre‑Commonwealth Games training base in Aberdeen, Scotland. Director General Bukola Olopade, who also serves as Chef de Mission for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, greeted the contingent upon arrival and inspected the camp’s accommodation and facilities.
The squad will remain in Aberdeen for approximately 20 days before moving to the Games Village in Glasgow, where the competition will run from 23 July to 2 August 2026.
Speaking at the camp, Olopade emphasized that thorough preparation is essential for success. “Our athletes deserve the very best environment to train, recover and compete, and that is exactly what we have provided in Aberdeen,” she said.
She added that the NSC’s goal is to remove any avoidable distractions, allowing athletes and coaches to concentrate fully on performance. Olopade noted the excellent atmosphere, first‑class facilities, and the high spirits of the team members.
By Friday evening, 54 athletes had already reported to the camp, with additional competitors and officials expected over the weekend. Among those welcomed were team captain and multiple Paralympic gold medallist Folashade Oluwafemiayo, sprinter Favour Ashe, and quarter‑miler Patience George‑Okon.
Aberdeen was selected for its calm, high‑performance setting, ideal for acclimatization, technical sharpening, and recovery ahead of the Games. After the three‑week stint, Team Nigeria will proceed to Glasgow to compete for medals across various disciplines.
