A young Nigerian man described a terrifying experience in which he was allegedly abducted shortly after getting on a commercial bus in Lagos.
Travel Between Island and Mainland
He said the incident occurred on June 25, 2026, while he was traveling between friends residing on the island and the mainland.
He recalled, “I was kidnapped and robbed in Lagos on June 25, 2026. I was heading from a friend’s place on the island to another friend’s place on the mainland. I missed the road and had to stop a few times.”
It was raining heavily and traffic was congested. He asked a passerby for directions; the woman told him the destination was just one bus stop away and advised him to take a danfo. He followed her suggestion.
“I asked the driver how much the fare was. He initially quoted ₦1,000, but knowing that short trips rarely cost that much, I negotiated the price down to ₦700. The driver accepted. I boarded the bus, where a young man sat next to me, six other passengers occupied the remaining seats, and an elderly woman sat in front. At certain points, the elderly woman got off.”
Suspicion Inside the Bus
He mentioned that he was distracted during the ride and did not notice anything odd at first.
“I wasn’t really paying attention to the route because I’m unfamiliar with the area. I was busy editing my content and finishing a job application. When I glanced at my map, I noticed it kept rerouting me.”
“When I looked up, I saw the bus had stopped in a deserted area with few houses, lots of bushes, and many unfinished buildings. I didn’t think much of it, knowing that Lagos drivers sometimes cut through to avoid traffic. The driver then exited, saying he needed to get fuel. I assumed he was going to the black market for fuel, so I didn’t protest.”
Attack Begins
The situation changed suddenly when one of the passengers demanded his phone.
“One of the men sitting in front of me turned and said, ‘Let me see your phone.’ I started arguing, asking why he would request my phone from a stranger.”
Fear and Safety Concerns
He said the abductors continued to assault them while forcing them to unlock their devices, leaving him fearing for his life.
“While I was still protesting, he grabbed the phone from my hand. As I reacted, a passenger at the back said, ‘Guy, calm down.’ That’s when I realized things had taken a turn for the worse. They seized the phone of the young man beside me, placed their hands around our necks to avoid drawing attention from nearby residents, and led us to an unfinished building where they began beating us. They slapped me repeatedly, demanded that I unlock my phone, and kept striking me.”
