Portable Calls Out Top Nigerian Artists Over Song Themes
Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, widely known as Portable, has voiced his frustration with the current direction of music from some of the country’s biggest stars.
According to Portable, the fame and wealth enjoyed by artistes such as Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy and Olamide have shifted their focus away from realistic storytelling. He claims their recent tracks centre mostly on women, luxury lifestyles and vanity, rather than addressing the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
He argued that these songs no longer inspire or impart useful lessons, leaving listeners without motivation. Portable believes the artistes’ success has distanced them from the everyday experiences of the majority of Nigerians.
The “Zazu” crooner also urged his fellow musicians to change course by producing more conscious music that carries positive messages. He specifically encouraged the creation of gospel‑themed songs that remind people to remember God.
Portable stated bluntly: “I noticed that Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy and Olamide don’t praise God in their songs; they only sing about ladies. Is it because they already have money and think they can’t fall? Their songs have no motivation, no sensible lyrics — just women and vanity.”
He concluded with a call to action: “Make conscious music. We are tired of all those songs about frivolities. I am also a musician. You all should do better.”
