Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo has suffered a heartbreaking loss after his wife and two young children were confirmed dead following last week’s earthquakes in Venezuela.
The 38‑year‑old midfielder, who plays for Venezuelan second‑division side Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira, was attending a training camp in Caracas when the twin quakes struck. He raced to his family’s beachfront home in La Guaira, about 18 miles north of the capital, only to find the building reduced to rubble.
Trejo spent three days sifting through the debris, hoping to find his wife Yanina and their children Aarón and Ainhoa alive. His brother‑in‑law, Ricardo Ardiles, told CNN Español that the player was “emotionally overwhelmed” by what he described as a horrific scene.
Friends and teammates appealed for heavy machinery to aid the rescue effort, noting that the single machine available was insufficient. As the search continued, the club released a statement confirming the deaths on Sunday, June 28.
Club and Community Response
Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira expressed deep sorrow, saying it “deeply mourns the irreparable loss” of Trejo’s family. The announcement included a photograph of the footballer with his wife and children and a message of solidarity: “Lucas, you are not alone. Your family at Maritime La Guaira is with you.”
The tragedy extends beyond Trejo’s family. Venezuelan authorities reported more than 1,400 fatalities, with thousands still missing. The disaster also claimed the life of promising young footballer Yimvert Berroteran, who had recently represented Venezuela at the FIFA Under‑17 World Cup and played for the Under‑time.
