Peter Obi Condemns Sowore’s Remand at Kuje Prison
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has voiced strong concern over the court’s decision to remand activist Omoyele Sowore to the Kuje Correctional Centre.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Obi described the development as a “dangerous regression for democracy” and warned against the growing tendency to employ state institutions to stifle dissent.
He argued that such actions undermine civic freedom and could erode public trust, especially amid Nigeria’s current economic hardship and insecurity.
“A thriving democracy does not survive on the silencing of opposing voices; rather, it is anchored on the robust protection of fundamental human rights, most notably the freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly, as enshrined in our Constitution,” Obi said.
The NDC flag bearer urged authorities to ensure strict adherence to constitutional protections and due process, cautioning that treating critics as threats to national stability signals a slide toward authoritarianism.
Obi concluded by stating that building a “New Nigeria” is impossible if democratic structures meant to protect citizens continue to be weakened in the name of enforcement.
