The entire Enugu State delegation in Nigeria’s House of Representatives has officially switched allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Governor Peter Mbah personally witnessed the historic defection during Thursday’s declaration ceremony in Abuja.
Lawmakers attributed their decision to unresolved internal crises within their former parties. They stated these issues threatened opposition stability and development prospects.
Before this move, Labour Party held seven of Enugu’s eight federal seats. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) controlled the remaining position. This mass defection now gives APC full control of Enugu’s representation.
Lawmakers Explain Defection Rationale
Nnolim Nnaji, spokesman for the defectors and Nkanu East/Nkanu West representative, explained their motivation. Alignment with Governor Mbah’s administration and the federal ruling party drove their decision.
He stated:
Visit Enugu to witness the transformation. The governor delivers for our people. We must connect our state to national leadership.
Nnaji called the move “a bold step into the future.” He emphasized it reflected courage and commitment to progress.
The lawmaker further declared:
Enugu remained in opposition too long. We watched others shape Nigeria’s destiny. That era ends now. We must participate in national progress and access development opportunities.
Nnaji stressed APC alignment would benefit constituents directly. He predicted increased projects, infrastructure, jobs, and youth empowerment. The decision followed careful deliberation about constituency interests.
In a related development, Bassa/Jos North representative Daniel Asama also defected. He left Labour Party for the ruling APC.
