William Troost-Ekong Backs Ghana to Secure Draw Against England in 2026 World Cup Opener
Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has voiced his support for Ghana ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L encounter with England, suggesting the Black Stars are capable of earning at least a point when the teams meet in Foxborough on Tuesday.
Despite the historic rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria, Troost-Ekong emphasized that he wants to see all African sides succeed on the world stage. He noted that while Ghana famously edged out Nigeria for a place at the 2022 World Cup, continental solidarity takes precedence during the tournament.
“I would love Ghana to go and do well. I think the beauty of the World Cup, and I think all the teams, even when we’ve been at the World Cup before, we want to see the other African teams do well. I think it’s very important for the continent,” Troost-Ekong said, as quoted by the Punch.
He added that, beyond the frequent on‑field clashes, there is genuine respect between the players, a sentiment that feels easier to express now that he has retired from international duty.
Troost‑Ekong praised Ghana’s performance in their opening win over Panama, pointing out the resilience shown by the squad and the impact of second‑half substitutes Brandon Thomas‑Asante and Abdul Fatawu.
“I was very happy with their performance against Panama. Leading up to the game against England, there were a lot of positives. I thought they looked very resilient in that game. I think the introduction of the substitutes in the second half, especially Brandon Thomas‑Asante and Abdul Fatawu, made a really big difference. I think they’ve given England something to think about,” he remarked.
Now working as a television pundit, the Al Ahli Doha defender also expressed uncertainty about the availability of midfielder Thomas Partey, who was denied entry into Canada and missed the Panama match.
England began their campaign with a 4‑2 victory over Croatia, thanks to two goals from Harry Kane and second‑half strikes from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford. Nevertheless, Troost‑Ekong believes the Three Lions display defensive frailties that Ghana can exploit.
“I think picking up the three points against Panama will give them a chance to play confidently against England. I think, from what I’ve seen of England, there are definitely opportunities to take advantage of,” he said.
When asked for a score prediction, Troost‑Ekong leaned toward a draw, envisioning both sides finding the net.
“So, if I were predicting that game, I’d probably say a draw because I could see both teams scoring,” he concluded.
