Hon. Istifanus Mwansat, Special Adviser to Governor Caleb Mutfwang on Political Matters, has strongly denied reports. These reports claimed the governor defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking in a telephone interview with Daily Trust on Thursday, Mwansat clarified the situation. He stated that Governor Mutfwang remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This is despite ongoing discussions about his political future.
The political adviser also dismissed claims linking him to any confirmed defection. He stressed that Governor Mutfwang is still carefully considering his political options.
“Discussions are indeed ongoing,” Mwansat stated. “However, ongoing discussions are not the same as a defection. It is an option currently being considered. These discussions are moving in that direction. But, as of now, he has not defected.”
Mwansat further explained that Governor Mutfwang is actively consulting with key stakeholders. These consultations are happening across various political levels. A final decision will be made only after these discussions.
Speculation regarding a possible defection has already ignited heated debates. These discussions are between PDP loyalists and supporters of APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda. These debates are ongoing within Plateau State.
Mwansat further clarified the meaning of defection. “When someone says he has decamped, it implies all formalities are complete,” he explained. “It means registering with the APC and resigning from the PDP. None of these actions have occurred. I did not state that Governor Mutfwang has decamped.”
