Cooking gas prices in Nigeria have skyrocketed in late 2025, imposing severe strain on households already battling high inflation and living expenses. Recent retail data shows liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) costs reaching unprecedented levels nationwide.
Current Cooking Gas Prices
A standard 12.5kg cylinder now sells for ₦15,000 to ₦16,500 across major cities. In Lagos and other urban centers, per-kilogram rates hit ₦2,500-₦3,000. This marks a dramatic increase from previous months.
Key Drivers of Price Surge
Supply Chain Disruptions
Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) reduced shipments due to maintenance at its Bonny Island facility. A PENGASSAN union strike further disrupted loading and distribution. These constraints tightened domestic LPG availability.
Currency and Transport Pressures
The naira’s depreciation increased import costs for gas components. Soaring diesel prices and poor infrastructure compounded expenses. Longer transport routes inflated distribution charges significantly.
Demand-Infrastructure Mismatch
Government clean-cooking initiatives boosted LPG demand. However, domestic bottling, storage, and distribution capacities remain insufficient. This structural gap prevents supply from meeting growing consumer needs.
Consumers now face tough choices as cooking gas becomes increasingly unaffordable. Many households are reverting to traditional fuels like charcoal despite health and environmental concerns.
