NDC, PDP Faction and Obidient Movement Warn FG Over Peter Obi’s Safety
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki, and the Obidient Movement Worldwide have jointly accused the Federal Government of targeting opposition figures and endangering the life of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.
The warning follows Obi’s recent statement that he might not live to contest the 2027 presidential election because of alleged frustration and intimidation by the government. He said, “Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. I’m telling you,” and added that every aspect of his livelihood is being deliberately frustrated.
NDC Calls for Immediate Protection
Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, National Publicity Secretary of the NDC, described Obi’s remarks as “seriously disturbing and very concerning.” He argued that the Tinubu administration has failed to provide adequate security for a two‑time presidential candidate who garnered votes across the nation.
Abdulsalam pointed out that Obi has been denied proper security detail, despite the presence of non‑state actors who may wish to harm him. He warned that the Federal Government would be held responsible if anything happened to Obi, citing past attacks on former President Muhammadu Buhari during his campaign and the robust protection provided by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
He urged President Bola Tinubu to extend the same level of security afforded to Buhari to Obi, his running mate, and all other presidential contenders, emphasizing that such protection is a constitutional entitlement, especially during periods of heightened vulnerability.
Obidient Movement Highlights Blocked Lectures
Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, said Obi’s statement reflects the broader challenges faced by the movement. He alleged that Obi has been barred from delivering lectures at several universities, including those in Bauchi, Zaria, Calabar, and Ife (Obafemi Awolowo University).
Tanko recounted attempts to speak at Ahmadu Bello University, the University of Calabar, and Obafemi Awolowo University, all of which were thwarted by institutional mechanisms. He characterized the situation as a systematic effort to frustrate Obi’s outreach to Nigerian youth.
He added that the movement feels like an “endangered species” in the quest for a better Nigeria, and that Obi’s public disclosure of these challenges serves to alert the public to the level of danger faced by his supporters.
PDP Faction Accuses APC of Targeting Opposition
Ini Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary of the Tanimu Turaki‑led PDP faction, accused the ruling APC of pressuring opposition leaders politically, socially, and economically. He cited examples such as the Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s repeated unsuccessful attempts to meet President Tinubu in Abuja.
Ememobong warned that the administration operates like a “criminal enterprise” and urged Nigerians to persist in demanding transparency and the preservation of multi‑party democracy.
