Crystal Palace Claims First European Trophy
Jean-Philippe Mateta netted the decisive goal as Crystal Palace secured a 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final held in Leipzig. The win marks the club’s first ever European trophy.
The French striker pounced early in the second half, converting a rebound after Adam Wharton’s effort was parried by Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla. Mateta’s finish from close range broke the deadlock.
The triumph concludes a remarkable spell for outgoing manager Oliver Glasner, who guided the Eagles to FA Cup, Community Shield and now Conference League glory in just two and a half years before departing Selhurst Park.
Both teams arrived at their inaugural European final, and nervous play characterised the opening stages at the Red Bull Arena. Clear chances were scarce, with Alemao and Unai Lopez both seeing efforts drift wide for Rayo, while Tyrick Mitchell headed a Wharton cross just over the bar before the break.
The breakthrough arrived six minutes after the restart. Wharton’s low shot forced Batalla into a save, and the rebound fell to Mateta, who made no mistake from a few yards out to give Palace the lead.
The goal was Mateta’s 16th of the season for the club, adding poignancy to a campaign that had nearly seen him leave in January before a knee injury scuttled a proposed move to AC Milan.
Rayo pressed for an equaliser late on. Yeremy Pino struck both posts with a free‑kick and later created another chance for Mateta at the opposite end, but Batalla remained resolute, preserving Palace’s slender advantage.
Despite operating with La Liga’s smallest budget, the Spanish side could not find a way past a disciplined Palace defence, allowing the Londoners to celebrate a historic night in Germany.
