Introduction
A Nigerian woman has come forward with her own story to demonstrate that men and women can maintain a purely platonic friendship.
The Living Arrangement
While studying at university, she encountered housing difficulties and chose to stay with a male friend for over six months. During that time they shared a self‑contained apartment and even slept on the same bed.
Maintaining Boundaries
Despite the close quarters, she insists that her friend never overstepped any line. He refrained from making inappropriate remarks or romantic advances, treating her with respect throughout. She also mentioned that his girlfriend would visit occasionally, yet nothing changed the nature of their relationship.
Friendship After Moving Out
After she moved out, the two remained friends. This experience solidified her belief that men and women are capable of sustaining strictly platonic bonds.
Why Some Doubt Platonic Friendship
She argues that those who claim such friendships are impossible are often projecting their own insecurities or limited experiences onto others, rather than recognizing that people are capable of different kinds of connections.
Her Personal Account
She recalled, ‘I remember when I was at university and faced accommodation issues. I ended up staying with my male friend for more than six months. Even today people find it hard to believe that nothing happened between us, especially since we were living in a self‑contained space and shared a bed. He never crossed the boundary, not even by accident. There was never an inappropriate comment, touch, or advance of any kind. Yes, he had a girlfriend who stopped by from time to time. I remained there for over six months and left with our friendship intact. So when anyone asks me today whether a man and a woman can be just friends, I answer with a definite yes, because I have lived it.’
