FIFA Extends Themba Zwane’s Ban After Red Card vs Mexico
South Africa’s hopes at the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a blow when attacking midfielder Themba Zwane was handed a three‑match suspension following his dismissal in the Group A clash against Mexico.
The incident occurred in the 84th minute at Estadio Azteca, where Zwane was shown a straight red card after a VAR review deemed he had illegally raised his arm against Mexican winger Roberto Alvarado while Bafana Bafana pushed forward.
Although a typical straight red results in a one‑game ban, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee ruled the challenge constituted serious foul play and added two extra matches to the sanction.
Head coach Hugo Broos acknowledged the first red card (shown to teammate Sithole) but voiced strong disagreement with the decision to eject Zwane.
“The second red card can be debated,” Broos told reporters after the match. “It appeared the Mexican player was blocking my player, and I don’t believe the contact warranted a red card.”
He added that the first dismissal, involving Yaya’s foul on a lone Mexican attacker, was understandable.
Mexico also finished the game with ten men after defender César Montes received a red card in stoppage time, but the damage had already been done as the hosts secured all three points.
South Africa will now look to revive their World Cup campaign when they face the Czech Republic in Atlanta on Thursday. The Czechs enter the match after a 2‑1 loss to South Korea in their opener.
