Umeh Refutes Claims of Obi’s Influence in NDC
The senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, has dismissed allegations that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is meddling in the party’s internal decisions.
Umeh responded to rumors suggesting Obi was influencing appointments and outcomes following the NDC’s recent primary elections.
He described Obi as a politician who does not interfere in party processes, stating that Obi has not been involved in determining who holds which position within the NDC.
“Peter Obi has not been involved in influencing who becomes what in the NDC. He is the kind of person you would hardly see dragging himself into such a process,” Umeh said.
He added that in Obi’s home local government, residents are already well‑informed and do not need his direction on whom to support.
The lawmaker emphasized that the NDC operates under a recognized leadership structure headed by former Bayelsa State governor, Senator Seriake Dickson.
According to Umeh, Dickson’s leadership was a key factor in his decision to join the party, noting his familiarity with Dickson’s character and stance on national issues.
“In the NDC, the party has a clear leadership, and Senator Seriake Dickson is at the helm. It is because of his leadership that I and others chose to align with the party,” he explained.
Umeh also noted that the entry of Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso into the NDC has attracted many aspirants eager to contest various positions.
He suggested that those alleging extortion are merely complaining after failing to secure the outcomes they desired.
“Those claiming they were extorted are trying to cheat and have had their fingers burnt,” Umeh concluded.
