A woman shared a disturbing experience she faced while traveling outside Lagos, explaining how her attempt to comfort a distressed stranger almost led to her being accused of theft.
She said the incident began when she noticed a lady loudly lamenting a lost mobile phone, appearing visibly upset as she described the missing device.
Feeling compassion, she offered kind words, hoping the phone would be found.
Accused After Showing Compassion
While speaking with the upset woman, her own phone became visible. She pointed out that it matched the model the owner was describing. The situation quickly turned when the distressed woman suddenly blamed her for the theft.
Within moments, a crowd gathered, confronting her and accepting the accusation as truth. She repeatedly insisted the phone was hers and that she had only approached to calm the woman.
Intervention Shifts the Situation
As tensions rose, a bystander stepped forward, urging the crowd to let her explain fully before jumping to conclusions.
She recalled, “But the part that still shocks me today is that she didn’t even apologize. She just looked at me and said, ‘Just go, abeg I thought maybe I’ve found my phone.’ That was it. No sorry. No explanation. Nothing.”
She noted that no apology followed, and the episode remains vivid because of how quickly public suspicion turned against her despite her good intentions.
The story has sparked online debate about mistaken accusations, mob mentality, and the need to verify facts before passing judgment.
