Fubara May Defect to NDC, Analyst Predicts
A director of research at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Femi Otubanjo, has suggested that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara may defect to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Otubanjo argued that if Fubara joins the NDC, he could emerge as a strong contender within the party and potentially win electoral support.
He also placed part of the blame on the governor himself, stating that Fubara bears responsibility for his current political predicament.
The analyst pointed out that Fubara’s rise to the governorship was closely tied to the political structure of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Otubanjo was quoted as saying: “Fubara will go to NDC and he will try. He might even win, but the danger for Fubara is that when he goes to NDC, and he still has the legislators, 28 of them around him, he might even be impeached before the election and that will make him less powerful and less formidable candidate.”
He concluded by likening the situation to jumping into a river and then complaining about being wet, emphasizing that Fubara’s difficulties are largely self‑inflicted.
