NDC Reschedules 2027 Primary Elections to May 29, 2026
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general polls will now take place on May 29, 2026. The shift comes after the party reviewed the original May 28‑29 timetable and identified significant logistical challenges stemming from the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
According to a statement signed by National Chairman Senator Moses Cleopas and National Secretary Barr. Ikenna Alex-Morgan, the Eid-el-Kabir holiday has disrupted flights and transportation, leaving many aspirants and screening team members stranded in Abuja. To accommodate these difficulties, the NDC has designated May 28 for arrivals, documentation with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, consultative meetings, and other preparatory activities.
The statement emphasized that no state agencies — including the Police, INEC, or the DSS — are permitted to participate in the May 28 programmes. Any activity conducted outside these guidelines would be considered unauthorized and illegal.
Procedure for the May 29 Primaries
- Presidential affirmation
- National Assembly primaries/affirmation
- State Assembly primaries/affirmation
- Governorship primaries/affirmation
Results from each state will be collated and forwarded to the NDC National Headquarters, where the National Working Committee will officially announce the outcomes. The party stressed that no state executive or team has the authority to release results independently.
The NDC called on all participants to act responsibly, reiterating its zero‑tolerance stance toward violence, disorderly conduct, and hooliganism during the electoral process.
