APC National Secretary Calls on Former Ekiti Gov Fayemi to Resign or Face Sanctions
The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has urged former Ekiti State governor Kayode Fayemi to quit the party if he no longer believes in its ideals. Speaking to Saturday Punch, Basiru said Fayemi should demonstrate the courage to formally resign rather than remain a member while wishing the party ill.
Basiru accused Fayemi of working with opposition elements to weaken the APC in the lead‑up to the Ekiti governorship election. He claimed that the timing of Fayemi’s recent remarks — where he said the party was “losing its bearing and vision” — was calculated to “demarket” the APC before the primaries.
The APC secretary noted that Fayemi, a founding member of the party and former Minister of Solid Minerals Development, had criticised the party’s internal debate culture and its growing reliance on consensus candidates during state primaries, arguing that such practices contradict democratic principles.
Basiru insisted that any concerns Fayemi had should have been raised through the party’s internal dispute‑resolution mechanisms. Public criticism at this stage, he argued, amounts to an attempt to sabotage the party’s electoral prospects.
He also linked Fayemi’s statements to earlier claims by former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi that certain APC members were colluding with opposition forces. Basiru said Fayemi’s comments “only further confirmed” Amaechi’s allegation that he was among those forming an opposition bloc within the APC.
In defence of President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms — including the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira — Basiru labelled Fayemi’s criticism as “ill‑informed or mischievous.” He maintained that the reforms are necessary for national development and that dissent should be constructive, not destructive.
The APC national secretary warned that if Fayemi refuses to leave the party, the APC will not hesitate to invoke disciplinary measures against him for anti‑party activities. He urged Fayemi to join another political outfit where he can freely express his views, rather than remain within the APC while wishing it failure.
