Thomas Tuchel Defends Shocking England World Cup Squad Omissions
England manager Thomas Tuchel has stood by his decision to leave several high‑profile players out of the final 26‑man World Cup squad, insisting he feels “no fear” about the choices.
Stars such as Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander‑Arnold were omitted, while Harry Maguire reportedly felt “shocked” and “gutted” after missing out. Luke Shaw, Adam Wharton and Morgan Gibbs‑White also did not make the cut.
Tuchel explained that squad balance, not individual reputation, guided his selections.
“From day one we were clear that we are trying to build the best possible team, which is not simply the 26 most talented players,” he said. “Teams win championships – it’s as simple as that.”
Despite the surprise exclusions, Tuchel stressed that Foden and Palmer had done nothing wrong and could have been part of the camp.
“These are very difficult decisions and painful conversations,” he added. “What we aim for is a balanced squad. With 55 players in contention, some extraordinary talents and personalities must stay home.”
He noted that Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers were preferred in attacking midfield roles, while specialist wingers were chosen to provide width.
The biggest talking point was the inclusion of Ivan Toney, who plays for Al‑Ahli in Saudi Arabia. Tuchel admitted the call‑up “was a bit of a surprise to us” but praised the striker’s finishing, aerial strength and set‑piece ability.
England open their 2026 World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas on June 17, before facing Ghana and Panama in the group stage.
