The Labour Party (LP) has announced a significant adjustment to its primary election schedule. All primaries, initially planned for separate dates, will now hold simultaneously. The new date is Saturday, May 30, 2026.
This rescheduling affects many contests. These include presidential, governorship, senatorial, and House of Representatives primaries. It also covers State Houses of Assembly aspirants.
Why the Primaries Were Rescheduled
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, confirmed the new dates in an official statement. He explained that the decision became necessary. It followed the identification of clashes with two important national events.
Initially, the governorship and State Houses of Assembly primaries were slated for May 27, 2026. The presidential and National Assembly primaries were set for May 29, 2026.
However, May 27, 2026, coincides with Eid el-Kabir, also known as Eid al-Adha. Furthermore, May 29 marks a key national milestone. It is the third anniversary of the inauguration of elected public office holders nationwide.
Mr. Asogwa emphasized the importance the Labour Party places on both occasions. The party aims to prevent conflicts. It wants its members and aspirants to fully participate in these significant events.
He stated that the Labour Party, as a people-oriented and responsive political body, adjusted its schedule. This considers the spiritual importance of Sallah and the national significance of the May 29th anniversary. This adjustment, he added, ensures “members, aspirants, supporters, and Nigerians generally” can “fully observe these important occasions.”
Labour Party’s Message to Stakeholders
The Labour Party expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by this change. It extended apologies to aspirants, stakeholders, supporters, and the general public.
The party also thanked its members and all Nigerians for their understanding and cooperation. The party urged all aspirants and stakeholders to note the new May 30, 2026 date. They should make the necessary preparations.
