Tanzania’s Minister of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Professor Palamagamba Kabudi, has issued a historic challenge to the Taifa Stars. He urged them to rewrite football history starting with their crucial clash against Nigeria in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Decades-Long Rematch Against Nigeria
The Group C showdown is scheduled for December 23 at Fez Stadium in Morocco. This match holds special significance for Tanzania. It marks only the second AFCON group-stage meeting between the nations. Their first encounter occurred 46 years ago. On March 8, 1980, Nigeria claimed a 3-1 victory at Lagos National Stadium.
Minister Kabudi delivered his rallying cry during Tanzania’s official flag handover ceremony in Cairo. He emphasized discipline, unity, and national pride. “In the Africa Nations Championship, Tanzania qualified unbeaten for the quarter-finals,” Kabudi stated. “That was historic. I urge you to fight hard and make history again at AFCON.”
Tanzania-Nigeria Football Rivalry
The teams have faced each other five times across all competitions. Nigeria holds the advantage with three victories. The remaining two matches ended in draws.
Group C Challenges Ahead
Tanzania’s AFCON campaign features historic regional matchups. They will meet Uganda for the first time in an AFCON group stage. The neighbors have clashed 22 times overall. Uganda leads with 13 wins to Tanzania’s five.
The Taifa Stars conclude Group C fixtures against Tunisia. The North Africans narrowly defeated Tanzania 1-0 during 2021 AFCON qualifiers.
Government Backing for Historic Campaign
Kabudi confirmed strong government support for the squad in Morocco. Deputy Minister Paul Makonda will join senior officials traveling with the team. This delegation aims to boost morale. They will ensure players feel the nation’s full backing during their landmark campaign.
