The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of suppressing political opposition and creating conditions for violent elections in 2027. Party officials announced plans to petition international bodies over alleged persecution of ADC members.
ADC spokesperson Ibrahim Abdullahi revealed the party will formally appeal to international institutions. This includes the ECOWAS Court of Justice. The move seeks global attention on perceived democratic erosion in Nigeria. “We want the international community to note APC’s actions against opposition,” Abdullahi stated.
Abdullahi highlighted concerning patterns of attacks against ADC members. Incidents primarily occurred in APC-controlled states. The party suspects a coordinated agenda to undermine its growth. “Attacks make us question if there’s a plan to prevent ADC from taking root,” he added.
The spokesperson referenced a Canadian court’s prior description of APC and PDP as “terrorist organizations.” Recent violence against ADC members reinforces this perception, according to Abdullahi. He asserted the ruling party demonstrates dangerous intolerance toward opposition.
Abdullahi warned that current events foreshadow electoral violence in 2027. He blamed APC’s “win-at-all-costs” mentality for creating dangerous precedents. The spokesman cited incidents across multiple states including Kaduna, Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, Kogi and Edo.
Notable attacks include the August 30 assault on an ADC meeting in Kaduna. Former Governor Nasir El-Rufai attended the event. He condemned the violence as “lawlessness.” Separately, ADC’s Ekiti secretariat was recently set ablaze. Hoodlums vandalized property and disrupted an inauguration ceremony.
