Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has attributed his political difficulties to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), claiming he endured significant hardship during the state’s recent crisis.
Following his reinstatement in September after a six-month suspension imposed by President Bola Tinubu, Fubara formally joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) on December 9, 2025.
“Progressive at Heart”
Speaking at APC headquarters in Abuja, Fubara described himself as fundamentally progressive: “When you say I’m new to the progressive family, that’s correct technically. But I’ve always been progressive at heart.” He pledged to unite APC members for Rivers State’s development.
The governor characterized his party transition as straightforward: “My joining APC expresses gratitude to President Tinubu. It enables me to collaborate with fellow progressives for Nigeria’s advancement.”
PDP Membership Disavowed
Fubara dramatically questioned his former party affiliation: “Honestly, was I truly a PDP member? I wasn’t. During the crisis, 90% of my suffering came from the party itself.”
He portrayed himself as politically isolated within PDP: “I was merely a nominal member. You couldn’t associate me with any faction—I remained on the periphery, outside the main political arena.”
The governor’s remarks follow mass defections by Rivers State lawmakers to the ruling party. His comments highlight ongoing political realignments in Nigeria’s oil-producing state.
