Senator Sunday Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He has joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in a significant political shift.
Reasons Behind the Defection
Katung cited the PDP’s prolonged leadership crisis as his primary reason for leaving. He stated the party could no longer safeguard his political future.
“The PDP has become fractured beyond repair,” Katung explained. He emphasized the party’s inability to meet constituents’ aspirations.
Constituency Consultations and New Direction
The lawmaker confirmed making his decision after extensive consultations with constituents. He believes only the APC provides a viable platform for serving his people effectively.
“Current political realities show our secure future lies with the APC,” Katung stated. He referenced Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
Senate Composition Shift
This defection reshapes Nigeria’s Senate composition. The APC now holds 74 seats. The PDP retains 27 seats.
Other party allocations include: Labour Party (4 seats), APGA (2 seats), NNPP (1 seat), and SDP (1 seat).
