Mohamed Salah has received nationwide support in Egypt following controversial comments about Liverpool FC, with fans and officials rallying behind the star player amid scrutiny over his club future. The reaction contrasts sharply with criticism from some English football pundits.
National Unity Behind Salah
Former Egypt assistant coach Diaa El-Sayed described the response as revolutionary: “This interview triggered a nationwide reaction. Ninety-nine percent of Egypt supports Salah.” Referred to as the “Egyptian King,” Salah remains an iconic national figure whose popularity transcends sports.
Cairo resident Noura Essam emphasized Salah’s cultural impact: “Before Salah, few Egyptians supported Liverpool. He gave us our first global football icon.”
Liverpool Decisions Fuel Passion
Egyptian frustration grew when Liverpool coach Arne Slot benched Salah for three consecutive matches, later excluding him from a Champions League squad. Former Egyptian FA spokesman Osama Ismail noted: “When Liverpool played Inter Milan, all of Egypt supported Inter.”
Ismail defended Salah’s character: “He’s not arrogant but confident,” adding that the forward wants to remain at Anfield.
AFCON Preparations Underway
As Egypt prepares for the Africa Cup of Nations, national team staff describe Salah as a model professional. Head coach Hossam Hassan, Egypt’s record goalscorer, has held detailed talks with his captain ahead of the tournament where Egypt seeks its first title since 2010.
Egyptian Minister of Sports Ashraf Sobhy personally welcomed Salah in Cairo after the Pharaohs’ 2-1 friendly victory against Nigeria. Journalist Ahmed Gamal Ali explained the emotional response: “It felt like a family member was humiliated. We don’t judge his actions because we haven’t lived his experience.”
Salah maintains he remains integral to Liverpool’s plans. Discussions between his representatives and the club will continue during his AFCON participation with Egypt.
