Kebbi State Football Association Chairman Abubakar Ladan has clarified the ownership status of Birnin Kebbi’s FIFA-standard stadium. He confirmed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) directly supervises the facility, not the Kebbi State Government.
A viral photograph showing a partially furnished stadium section recently sparked national conversations. This ignited debates about the project’s ownership and current condition.
Constructed under FIFA’s Forward Programme, the stadium represents FIFA’s initiative. It aims to enhance grassroots football infrastructure across Nigeria. The project also focuses on talent development nationwide.
Ladan addressed ownership questions during a weekend interview in Birnin Kebbi. The former state Commissioner for Works explained the government’s limited role. He stated authorities only provided the required 4-hectare land parcel.
“Providing land was mandatory for project siting,” Ladan emphasized. “This fulfilled FIFA’s pre-construction conditions for Birnin Kebbi.”
FIFA officials completed and commissioned the stadium in 2023. Since then, it has actively hosted matches. Kebbi United FC uses it as their home ground. Zamfara United FC also played there last season.
The facility has hosted the 2024 Governor’s Cup tournament. It regularly stages National League One matches. Development programs and European scouting missions have occurred there too.
Ladan confirmed NFF-appointed managers operate the stadium daily. However, the state government occasionally supports maintenance. This includes fencing the main pitch with wire mesh.
“State support makes the venue suitable for local leagues,” he noted. “But management remains under NFF control.”
He praised the state’s commitment to football development. The chairman described the stadium as a source of pride. It brings joy to players and supporters throughout Kebbi.
“This facility serves its purpose excellently,” Ladan concluded. “Footballers across our state are delighted with it.”
