Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has revealed his extraordinary intervention to ensure Nigerian players received their 2018 World Cup bonuses. Speaking on “The Obi One Podcast,” the ex-international detailed how he bypassed football authorities to secure payments.
The Unpaid Bonuses Predicament
Mikel disclosed players were owed qualification bonuses months before Russia 2018. NFF officials repeatedly assured payment upon camp arrival. These promises remained unfulfilled despite the team’s preparation.
“Players kept asking me about their money,” Mikel recalled. “We feared losing the bonuses post-tournament. A week passed in camp with no resolution.”
Presidential Intervention
With frustration mounting, Mikel contacted Abba Kyari, Chief of Staff to then-President Buhari. He explained the critical situation.
“I told him we needed the promised funds immediately. This was a serious national team issue,” Mikel stated. The response was swift and dramatic.
Jet-Delivered Millions
Within 24 hours, a private aircraft arrived at the team’s base. It carried millions in cash directly to the players’ hotel.
“I took custody of the money,” Mikel explained. “I instructed officials: ‘This belongs to the players.’ No one else could access it.”
Bonus Distribution Confirmed
The following day, all qualifying players received calculated payments. This ensured focus shifted to tournament preparations.
