Benue State Governor Caleb Mutfwang is reportedly preparing to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
His political adviser, Istifanus Nwansat, confirmed this development. Nwansat spoke to newsmen in Abuja on Monday.
Reasons for the Impending Move
Nwansat explained the governor’s planned defection to the APC. He highlighted two primary reasons for the significant political shift.
Firstly, the governor’s decision stems from ongoing chaos within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This internal instability, Nwansat stated, has rendered the PDP an unrealistic platform. He added that political actors can no longer effectively contest elections under its banner.
“From our assessment and analysis of all available options,” Nwansat asserted, “we concluded that moving into the APC is the safest decision. It carries the least risk factor for us today.”
Aligning with National Leadership
Secondly, the defection aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s political and governance trajectory on the Plateau. Nwansat emphasized the importance of this alignment.
“The governor believes it is good and reasonable as a leader,” Nwansat continued. “He aims to move his people to align with the President.”
He further clarified the motivation behind this alignment. “Even though we are members of the PDP, we appreciate and recognize Mr. President’s efforts,” he concluded. “He is working diligently to set things right across the nation.”
