Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to uphold strict discipline within the party. He stressed this adherence is crucial for safeguarding the party’s long-term future.
This directive emerged from a recent closed-door meeting. The party’s factional Chairman, Kabiru Turaki, SAN, led a delegation of PDP executives to Obasanjo’s penthouse residence. The meeting took place at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Key PDP figures were present at the meeting. They included Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees and former Senate President. Taofeek Arapaja, the National Secretary and former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, also attended. Other notable attendees were former Governors Babangida Aliyu of Niger State and Senator Jonah Jang of Plateau State. Wole Oluyede, the party’s governorship candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial elections, was among other party leaders present.
Speaking after the meeting, Ini Ememobong, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, shared insights from the discussions. He told PUNCH that Obasanjo particularly highlighted discipline as the bedrock of effective party administration.
Ememobong described the engagement as a “consultative meeting.” He stated, “We discussed the state of the nation, democracy, and current affairs. We had very fruitful discussions. He tasked us to carry on and soldier on.”
The former president’s message was clear. Ememobong quoted Obasanjo directly: “He practically and particularly said that we can’t allow indiscipline; that indiscipline destroys everything.”
According to Ememobong, the PDP leadership assured Obasanjo they would take his counsel seriously. They pledged to strengthen internal discipline. The party aims to ensure all members adhere to its rules and values. This commitment is intended to protect the PDP’s unity and credibility.
Ememobong added, “As you can see, the party is already on the path of discipline. If people act in ways that do not conform with discipline, we draw their attention to it. This is because indiscipline is a destroyer.”
