Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has officially defected. He moved from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He is now a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This marks a significant political shift in the state.
Fubara’s Meeting with President Tinubu
Governor Fubara’s defection followed a crucial meeting. He met President Bola Tinubu in Abuja. The private session took place at the State House. Fubara arrived at 5:01 p.m. He wore a deep-blue shirt and black trousers. He was seen heading towards the President’s office. This was shortly after Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, had also been present for a separate engagement.
Reasons Behind the Defection
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting, Governor Fubara explained his decision. He stated, “We feel isolated.” “We cannot fully support Mr. President if we do not identify with him.” He announced the collective decision. “All of us who have followed and suffered with me,” he said. “Our decision this evening is to move to APC.”
Fubara addressed both PDP and APC loyalists. He cited the PDP’s inability to protect him. This occurred during the recent political crisis in Rivers State. In contrast, the APC provided necessary support and protection. This factor heavily influenced his move.
The Governor clarified his Abuja visit. “I met Mr. President not for personal reasons,” Fubara explained. “It was for consultations on state affairs.” He highlighted the meeting’s key outcome. “We now have full support to leave our former party.” He added, “We lacked the protection we needed.” “Our struggles stemmed from the state’s crisis.” Fubara stressed President Tinubu’s role. “Without his intervention, Siminalayi Fubara would not be here today.” He concluded, “We have our people and supporters.” “Our decision is to join the APC.” “We will fully support the President’s agenda.”
Other Lawmakers Join APC
Governor Fubara’s defection spurred others. Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, was among them. Many Rivers House of Assembly members also switched parties. These include Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol (Gokana) and Major Jack (Akuku-Toru). Linda Stewart (Okrika) and Franklin Nwabochi (Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni) also defected. Others are Azeru Opara (Port Harcourt 3) and Smart Adoki (Port Harcourt 2). Enemi George (Asari-Toru 2) and Solomon Wami (Port Harcourt 1) joined them.
The list further comprises Igwe Aforji (Eleme) and Tekena Wellington (Asari-Toru 1). Looloo Opuende (Akuku-Toru 2) and Peter Abbey (Degema) also moved. Arnold Dennis (Ogu/Bolo), Chimezie Nwankwo (Etche), and Ofiks Kabang (Andoni) complete the list of defectors.
