Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, has accused his detractors of using critical security matters for political propaganda. He alleges these critics are exploiting sensitive issues.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Ibrahim Dosara, the Minister expressed concern. He described these as malicious and politically motivated attacks designed to tarnish his image.
Matawalle claimed these attacks are sponsored by individuals. Their 2027 political aspirations, he said, are jeopardized by ongoing government security reforms.
He added that the orchestrators are politicians seeking relevance. They are also attempting to divert him from his official duties.
The Minister emphasized, “Public service requires courage, consistency, and a dedication to truth.”
He further stated, “Attempts to link my name to unrelated incidents are nothing more than desperate political propaganda.”
Matawalle Addresses Banditry Concerns in Zamfara
Matawalle clarified that banditry was a deeply entrenched crisis in Zamfara. It existed long before his tenure as governor.
He asserted, “Banditry was not a problem that began under my leadership; it had escalated over several decades.”
During his administration, Matawalle implemented structured security measures. These included establishing high-level committees. He also improved intelligence gathering and prosecuted criminals.
Corrupt traditional rulers were also removed. Disarmament programs received strong military backing.
As governor, Matawalle noted the rescue of thousands of kidnapped victims. Additionally, 11 Chinese nationals involved in illegal mining were deported. He condemned any attempts to distort this record. He called it politicization of citizens’ suffering.
He also highlighted that Zamfara experienced over a year without major security incidents. Matawalle attributed this success to his implemented measures.
Matawalle recounted facing harassment during the rescue of kidnapped schoolgirls in Kebbi State. He stated, “I experienced harassment and intimidation… but I refused to yield to pressure. Humanity always comes first.”
Allegations of 2027 Political Motivation
He maintained that his attackers fear the ongoing defence reforms. Their motives, he believes, stem from the 2027 political contest.
Matawalle reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He declared, “My loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains total… No amount of propaganda will influence his decisions.”
