The All Progressives Congress (APC) is poised to welcome its 26th governor. Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang is set to defect from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
This development follows the earlier alignment of Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas with the APC. His official reception ceremony is still pending.
Sources within the APC National Working Committee (NWC) confirm Governor Mutfwang’s decision is final. He will switch allegiance ahead of the 2027 general elections. The governor has already met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
An APC official confirmed this development. Governor Mutfwang was elected under the factionalised PDP. He contacted the APC National Chairman last week. His intention was to leave the main opposition party.
Despite his past commitment to the PDP, Governor Mutfwang has now made his decision. An NWC member disclosed that Mutfwang informed the chairman last Tuesday. The chairman then facilitated a meeting with the President on Sunday.
The APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, facilitated this meeting. Professor Yilwatda was Mutfwang’s rival in the last governorship election. The meeting took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
“Governor Mutfwang met with the President at Aso Villa,” the source added. “He had previously informed the chairman of his intention to join the APC. His formal reception into the party will happen very soon.”
This confirmation quashes earlier speculations. Some reports suggested Professor Yilwatwa resisted the defection. However, party officials have dismissed these reports as untrue.
Furthermore, the NWC member reiterated that Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas is now considered an APC member. This brings the ruling party’s total count to 26 governors nationwide.
“With Governor Kefas on board, the APC now boasts 26 governors,” the official stated. “He merely postponed his reception due to sensitivity to the national mood.” This references the earlier delay of Kefas’s official defection rally.
