France national team manager Didier Deschamps believes his squad will be among the top contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He stated that only a select group of nations truly possess the quality and experience to lift the coveted trophy.
The Expanded Tournament and France’s Group
The expanded World Cup is set to kick off in June 2026. It will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. France has been drawn into Group I for the tournament.
They face a strong Senegal side and a rising Norway team. This group appears demanding on paper. However, Didier Deschamps expressed confidence that his squad will arrive ready to compete fiercely.
No Talk of Revenge for Qatar Defeat
France came incredibly close to winning the title in Qatar in 2022. They dramatically lost to Argentina in the final match. When asked if the upcoming World Cup presented a chance to avenge that defeat, the France coach quickly dismissed the notion.
He emphasized that every new tournament brings its own fresh challenges. “There is no rematch in football,” Deschamps told Olé. “Argentina won [the 2022 World Cup], and that cannot be changed now.”
He continued, “This is a new competition. We aim to go as far as possible. France is definitely a contender.”
A Small Circle of Potential Winners
The former World Cup winner also noted that the level of competition remains intense. This holds true even with a larger field of nations participating. “As in every World Cup, between six and seven teams have a realistic chance to win,” he explained.
“Ultimately, only one team emerges victorious. To be the best, you must defeat all your opponents.”
Messi and Ronaldo’s Potential Involvement
Deschamps also shared his belief that global icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo should be part of the 2026 tournament. “They are two players who have shaped international football for over 15 years,” he stated.
“Their participation would undoubtedly be something special for them and for the sport.”
