Popular Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, widely known as Kcee, has addressed the persistent rumors of a rift with his colleague, Flavour.
Recently, a social media post by Flavour drew Kcee’s attention. Though Flavour did not name anyone, Kcee responded publicly. He cautioned the highlife musician. Kcee told him to stop gatekeeping Igbo cultural music. He reminded Flavour of his earlier entry into the music industry.
In a new interview, Kcee offered more insight. Speaking with Yanga FM Lagos, Kcee suggested the alleged misunderstanding started years ago. It began during his first encounter with Flavour. Popular talent manager Soso Soberekon had brought Flavour to him. The aim was to sign Flavour to Kcee’s record label.
The “Limpopo” hitmaker explained his decision. He refused to offer Flavour a record deal back then. Kcee stated he “did not see potential” in Flavour at that particular time. He emphasized that some peers believe he lacks talent. Kcee attributes this to his humility. He prefers not to boast about his abilities.
Kcee shared his perspective. “Until now, I don’t grasp his reason for beefing with me,” he said. He specifically recalled the incident where Flavour hinted someone was copying him. Kcee noted that some people write others off. They hope you remain stagnant. However, you work hard and reach unexpected levels. This, he believes, is what truly happened.
He continued, “I was in the music industry before Flavour. Years ago, Soso Soberekon introduced him to me. Soso wanted me to sign him to my label. I was already driving luxury cars and living large before Flavour moved to Lagos. I told Soso I could not sign Flavour. I just didn’t see potential in him then. It was not due to any personal animosity.”
“I doubt that’s his reason for holding a grudge against me,” Kcee added. “But time will reveal all. Many of my colleagues undervalue my talent. My humble nature also plays a role in this. I choose not to brag. It’s unnecessary for me. Yet, as I always say, time always proves them wrong. My work silences all doubters.”
He concluded by saying, “Some who doubted me in the past have since apologized. They admitted their previous judgment was incorrect.”
