The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned recent defections. Several members of the Rivers State House of Assembly moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued on Saturday, the party described these lawmakers as “political puppets.” They are simply carrying out the bidding of their “paymaster,” the PDP claimed.
Among those who defected was the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule.
PDP’s Strong Reaction and Legal Vow
Ini Ememobong, the National Publicity Secretary for the PDP, issued the statement. He called the defectors “clogs in the wheels of democratic progress” and “enemies of democracy.”
Ememobong vowed that the PDP would initiate legal proceedings. The aim is to reclaim the party’s mandate from these defecting lawmakers.
“We have seen news across various media platforms. It reports the re-defection of some Rivers State House of Assembly members from our party. They announced their defection for a second time,” the statement read.
“We recall their earlier defection and subsequent recantation. These individuals are clearly doing the bidding of their paymaster and demigod, as the world knows.”
The PDP spokesperson further criticized their conduct since assuming office. “Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have shown themselves to be political puppets through their actions,” he stated.
“They are a clog in the wheels of democratic progress. History will remember them as enemies of democracy. They have made a mockery of the legislature,” Ememobong added.
He humorously remarked, “The easiest way to describe their action is a defection from APC to APC.”
The statement emphasized the party’s next steps. “Consequently, the PDP will take legal measures. This will activate provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).”
“We aim to recover the mandate gained under our party’s banner. These individuals have now ignobly and surreptitiously switched to another platform,” the statement concluded.
The party urged all its members in Rivers State to remain faithful and resolute. Efforts are currently underway, it noted, to rebuild the party. This rebuilding process will focus on inclusiveness, fairness, and equity.
