Port Harcourt, Rivers State – The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, has officially announced his defection. He moved from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday.
Amaewhule cited persistent internal divisions within the PDP as the main reason for his departure. He made this declaration before his fellow lawmakers.
“Distinguished colleagues, I am pleased to inform you of my decision,” Amaewhule stated. “I have formally written to my ward chairman about leaving the PDP. The APC is now my new political home.”
New Political Journey and Support for Tinubu
The Speaker confirmed that he is actively working to obtain his APC membership card. He expects to complete this process very soon.
“I will take all necessary steps,” Amaewhule affirmed. “My APC party card will be issued to me without delay. As of today, I am a member of the APC. We can now join forces with Mr. President.”
Amaewhule took the opportunity to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He lauded the President’s efforts in enhancing national security. He also acknowledged Tinubu’s commitment to empowering Rivers State within the federal framework.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is doing great work for our nation,” he noted. “He genuinely means well for Nigeria. He is tackling security challenges head-on. The President has shown significant love to Rivers State.”
Aligning with the Centre for Rivers People
The Speaker emphasized that his decision to defect was for the benefit of Rivers people. He believes aligning with the federal government is crucial for the state’s progress.
Amaewhule reiterated that the ongoing crisis within the PDP was a major factor. This crisis ultimately pushed him and his colleagues out of the party.
“The primary reason for leaving the PDP is the division within the party,” he concluded.
