Bashir Ahmad, former media aide to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, has offered his perspective on Peter Obi. He described the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election as a good person. However, Ahmad believes Obi’s political ambitions are being undermined by his own supporters.
Ahmad publicly stated, “Peter is a good person, but the people around him will never allow him to achieve his dream.” He then urged Obi’s followers to advise their leader. Ahmad suggested Obi should make a strategic sacrifice by aligning with President Bola Tinubu. This, he argued, would open future opportunities for everyone.
A Call for Political Alliance
Explaining his stance further, Ahmad called for a pragmatic approach. “If you genuinely want him to succeed, advise him to sacrifice today so that others can sacrifice for him tomorrow,” he counselled. He explicitly encouraged Obi to join the current administration. Ahmad added, “Tell him to come and join us; let President Tinubu complete his mandate in 2031, and then the future remains open for everyone.”
Critique of Supporters’ Conduct
Beyond the alliance suggestion, Ahmad also criticized the online conduct of Obi’s supporters. He labelled their social media content as “reckless.” Ahmad cautioned that such public behaviour might reflect questionable private counsel given to Obi. He remarked, “With this reckless content you post publicly, one can only imagine the kind of things you tell him privately.”
Ahmad’s comments arise amid broader political discussions. Reports suggest major opposition figures are considering a united front. This coalition includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi. Its goal is to challenge President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
