Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has strongly criticized a recent development. He condemned the alleged distribution of luxury vehicles. These vehicles reportedly went to state coordinators of a political mobilization group. This group is said to be linked to the Federal Government.
Obi shared his views on Thursday via his X platform. He described the alleged action as “profoundly insensitive.” He noted the severe plight of suffering Nigerians.
Reports indicate that President Bola Tinubu’s administration gifted Toyota Land Cruiser jeeps, Hilux trucks, and Hummer buses. These luxury vehicles were reportedly for state coordinators of the “Renewed Hope Ambassadors.” This political platform is allegedly being mobilized in preparation for the 2027 elections. Obi views this move as a clear sign of misplaced priorities.
“Nigerians are currently struggling with hunger, unemployment, and insecurity,” Obi stated. “For any government to allocate limited public resources for distributing luxury vehicles is not just insensitive. It represents a serious moral failure.”
Obi further criticized the alleged use of state funds for political showmanship. This happens while millions of citizens battle extreme poverty, he added.
“Ordinary Nigerians grapple with poverty and hopelessness,” Obi remarked. “Yet, those in leadership continue to flaunt their wealth. They drive brand-new Land Cruisers, Hiluxes, and Hummers.”
According to Obi, such conduct treats the public’s suffering. He called it “mere background for political theatrics.”
“This does not constitute governance,” he stressed. “It reflects deep insensitivity. It also shows an abuse of public trust, disguised as a political strategy.”
Obi emphasized that true leadership should focus on solving the nation’s most pressing issues. These include hunger, joblessness, failing healthcare systems, and insecurity.
“Leadership, especially during these challenging times, should provide food for the hungry,” he advised. “It should ensure access to healthcare for the sick. It must restore hope for millions of unemployed youths. Securing our communities is paramount. It should not be about parading luxury vehicles or campaigning for votes.”
The former Anambra State governor also lamented the daily struggles faced by Nigerian families. These challenges include school fees, maternal health issues, and rising insecurity. He concluded that the reported vehicle distribution is a “tragic misplacement of priorities.”
