The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has clarified the status of Nigeria’s relationship with the United States. He confirmed that recent US visa restrictions will not affect diplomatic ties. These restrictions were announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Idris stressed that Nigeria-US relations remain intact, despite the limitations placed on some individuals.
Idris spoke about this development during an appearance on Arise Television. He reiterated that Nigeria and the United States maintain a healthy relationship. Both nations are actively collaborating to resolve any existing challenges.
“Visa issues are the prerogative of every nation,” Idris stated. He explained that all countries, including America and Nigeria, have their own visa policies. These policies are subject to periodic review.
Addressing potential concerns about recent tensions, Idris emphasized inter-governmental cooperation. “Government to government, Nigeria and the United States are still working closely,” he affirmed. Their goal is to find solutions for any grey areas or challenges.
The Nigerian government is committed and open to engaging the United States. This engagement aims to resolve any diplomatic tensions that have arisen. Both countries seek to sort out all outstanding issues.
Idris concluded by stressing the normalcy of bilateral ties. “We still have normal diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the United States,” he stated. “We are working perfectly together,” he added, “to advance the mutual interests of both countries.”
