Shamsuddeen Hassan Basko has left the All Progressives Congress (APC). The Zamfara State House of Assembly member now joins the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He represents the constituency of former Governor Abdulaziz Yari.
The Speaker formally announced Basko’s defection on Thursday. This occurred during Governor Dauda Lawal’s presentation of the 2026 proposed budget.
The defection further diminishes former Governor Yari’s influence. His political standing weakened significantly after losing the Senate Presidency contest. Senator Godswill Akpabio won that contest two years ago.
Basko’s departure deepens internal rifts within the Zamfara APC. It also loosens Yari’s control over the party structure. Basko cited “deepening crises and poor leadership” as his reasons for leaving. He noted issues at both local government and state levels.
Basko formally submitted his resignation letter. It was dated December 3, 2025. The letter was addressed to the APC chairman of Galadima Ward, Talata Mafara Local Government Area. Titled “Resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC),” it expressed his frustrations. Basko stated that “persistent divisions” made effective participation impossible.
The letter read: “After careful reflection of activities, crisis, divisions, sidelined and poor leadership of the party from local government and the state levels, I have decided to step away from active participation in the party.”
He added that his decision aligns with his political beliefs. It also serves the developmental needs of his constituents. He seeks “commitments that align more closely” with these goals.
Basko described his departure as difficult. However, he deemed it necessary for his constituents’ progress. He expressed gratitude for his time in the ruling party.
He urged the ward leadership to process his formal exit. Copies of the letter went to the Zamfara State APC chairman. The Talata Mafara Local Government chairman also received a copy.
