Mike Arnold, an American missionary and human rights advocate, strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent ambassadorial nominations. He called them a “major error.” Arnold warned these appointments could damage Nigeria’s relationship with the new Trump administration.
Arnold, a former mayor from Texas, has long advocated against religious violence in Nigeria. He issued this warning from Capitol Hill. There, he is actively lobbying influential lawmakers.
Arnold shared his criticism on X. This comes at a critical time. Donald Trump is expected to return to the White House. US Congress members are reassessing America’s Africa policy. Nigeria’s ongoing insecurity is a key focus.
Nigeria faces severe challenges. Kidnappings, forced displacements, and ethnic conflicts persist. These issues concern both US political parties.
US Lawmakers Express Deep Concerns
Arnold recently concluded private meetings with key congressmen. These officials are shaping Trump’s Nigeria policy. Arnold presented a bleak assessment.
“Lawmakers are rightly skeptical,” Arnold stated. He referred to Tinubu’s commitment to ending violence. These appointments are seen as a cover-up, not a reform effort.
The controversial nominees include Reno Omokri and Femi Fani-Kayode. Omokri is a prominent social media figure and former presidential aide. Fani-Kayode previously served as aviation minister.
Both men face accusations. They allegedly minimized atrocities against Christians. They also reportedly shifted political allegiances for personal benefit. Omokri, a former Tinubu critic, now praises him. Arnold labels this “pathological flip-flopping.”
Poor Judgment Could Lead to Isolation
Arnold criticized Tinubu’s judgment harshly. He said appointing dishonest people to deny atrocities reveals an intention to cover up. It aims to deflect public attention, Arnold asserted.
“He is not just tone-deaf,” Arnold emphasized. “He is utterly unaware.” Arnold believes Tinubu does not grasp the intense scrutiny. He also lacks understanding of how to manage it.
The missionary has publicly debated Omokri on “genocide denial.” He strongly urged Nigeria’s Senate to reject these nominees. Arnold warned this validates a harmful message to youth. It suggests success comes from “selling your soul.” This erodes national integrity.
