Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola praised former Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe following his team’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Villarreal on Wednesday. Despite goals from Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva sealing the win, Guardiola singled out Pepe for special recognition.
Guardiola’s Compliments for Pepe
Guardiola described Pepe as a dangerous attacker after the match. He told reporters: “He’s really good. It’s been a while since his Arsenal days. I’m pleased he’s playing here at Villarreal now.”
The City boss added: “Arsenal’s significant investment in him proves his quality. He excels in one-on-one situations in attacking areas. Jeremy Doku and Bernardo Silva defended exceptionally well against him.”
Pepe had a golden opportunity to pull one back for Villarreal in the 77th minute. But his volley sailed over the crossbar.
Pepe’s Current Form
Despite the missed chance, the Ivorian has shone in La Liga this season. He earned August’s Player of the Month award. His performances have helped Villarreal reach third place in the league table.
Manchester City maintained their strong Champions League form with this victory. It followed previous results against Monaco and Napoli. The win keeps Guardiola’s squad firmly on track in the competition.
