The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recently held its governorship primary in Osun State. The party’s electoral committee confirmed a surprising detail. Governor Ademola Adeleke’s name appeared on the ballot. His co-aspirant, Adebayo Adedamola, was also listed.
Sunday Solarin, the committee’s Secretary, explained the situation. Governor Adeleke announced his resignation late. This happened after all voting documents were finalized. There was no time to alter or reprint the ballots.
Solarin clarified that the announcement came late Monday night. By then, ballots were already printed. They were packed and ready for delegates.
“Two aspirants were vying for the PDP ticket,” Solarin stated. “However, Governor Ademola Adeleke resigned from the party late on Monday. We could not amend the ballot papers.”
Solarin then instructed delegates. They should disregard the governor’s name. Despite its presence, only one candidate remained qualified.
He added, “As you prepare to cast your vote, remember this. Only Adebayo Adedamola is the PDP aspirant. His opponent resigned from the party.”
Delegates concluded voting as this report was filed. Ballot collation commenced shortly after. This process occurred at designated desks. INEC observers monitored it for proper documentation.
Party officials were seen in Osogbo on Tuesday morning. They sorted papers and tallied votes at collation tables. This took place ahead of the formal result declaration.
