Kolapo Alimi, Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, confirmed Governor Ademola Adeleke’s resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He stated it stemmed from prolonged internal challenges. This was not a sudden decision.
Commissioner Alimi addressed Osun residents during the ‘Frank Talk’ programme on Rave FM. He revealed the resignation had been contemplated for a long time.
Alimi quoted Governor Adeleke, who is also the Asiwaju of Ede. He stated, “The governor of Osun State has formally resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party.” He added, “The governor had written his resignation letter quite some time ago.”
The Commissioner added that Governor Adeleke deeply appreciates Osun residents’ support. He urged citizens to remain calm. He also asked them to continue their backing.
Alimi emphasized, “It was long overdue.” He reiterated gratitude for the people’s support. He urged their continued backing for the governor. He cited a Yoruba proverb, which means ‘the people are the governor’s protectors.’
He also shared Governor Adeleke’s sentiment. “Immediately I see many people around me, I will always be happy and joyous,” he quoted.
Why Governor Adeleke Left the PDP
Commissioner Alimi then discussed the reasons for the Governor’s departure. A major factor was the internal crisis within the PDP at the national level. This crisis significantly impacted the approaching governorship election. It also affected the tightening nomination timeline.
He elaborated on the circumstances. “The Governor is pleased with the public’s reaction,” Alimi stated. He clarified that the national crisis within the PDP was crucial. This division would play a vital role in the Governor’s nomination. He asserted that without this crisis, Adeleke would not have defected. “It’s not merely about defection,” he explained. “It’s about facing reality.” He mentioned that their election was set for August. However, the INEC window for nomination closed by December 15. This timeline necessitated the Governor’s resignation.
APC’s Reaction: A ‘Pretense’
Commissioner Alimi also addressed speculation about the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC). Some assumed the APC was happy about Governor Adeleke leaving the PDP. Alimi dismissed this. He called their purported happiness a mere pretense.
He explained Adeleke’s brilliance was the real reason for his resignation. The Governor was ‘miles ahead’ of the APC. The opposition had believed Adeleke would be foolish enough. They thought he would contest under a party riddled with crisis.
Alimi elaborated on the APC’s stance. “They’re pretending; they know what has hit them,” he stated. “They thought he would be a stupid person.” This way, they could challenge him. He further claimed that those causing problems within the PDP were “apologists for other political parties.”
He continued, “The APC in Osun believed Adeleke would be gullible.” They expected him to contest within the troubled PDP. This would allow them to use the national crisis against him. They planned to ‘fight him on all fronts.’ However, Adeleke proved ‘smarter.’ Alimi concluded, “Now, they know Adeleke is always ahead of them; they’re not happy.”
Future Political Alignment
When asked about Governor Adeleke’s new party, Alimi stated discussions were ongoing. He assured that clarity would emerge soon.
He elaborated, “Regarding where the governor is going, let us take it step by step.” He explained that “an election is a process.” “He has resigned now,” Alimi noted. “But by December 12 or 13, everyone would know.” This is because the deadline for nominations, primaries, and other party processes was December 15.
Alimi stressed that Adeleke’s resignation was avoidable. It only occurred due to division within the party.
He concluded, “If the PDP had not been fractionalized at the national level, Governor Ademola Adeleke would not have resigned.”
