Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State is currently meeting with President Bola Tinubu. Their discussion is taking place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. This Monday meeting marks a significant engagement for Governor Kefas. It is his first official interaction with the presidency since his intended move. He plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Kefas had previously scheduled a grand reception. This event was meant to welcome him into the APC on November 19. However, he suspended the ceremony. He stated that holding a political celebration then would be “insensitive.” Residents of Kebbi State were at the time coping with the abduction of schoolgirls in Maga.
Days before Governor Kefas’s proposed party change, other key figures in Taraba had already made the switch. The Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, along with fifteen other lawmakers, also left the PDP for the APC. These legislators justified their move. They cited the need to align with the central government. They also blamed the PDP’s national crisis. This crisis, they said, had weakened the party’s internal structure.
Governor Kefas brings a wealth of experience to his office. He is a retired Nigerian Army Lieutenant Colonel. He once chaired the board of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). He successfully won the March 2023 governorship election. He secured this victory on the PDP ticket. He hails from Wukari. Before becoming the PDP’s 2023 standard-bearer, he served as the Taraba PDP chairman.
