The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has announced the suspension of its governorship primaries. These primaries were initially scheduled for December 2, 2025. The decision comes amidst a worsening leadership crisis at the national level of the party.
Hon. Sunday Bisi, the State Chairman, made this revelation. He spoke during a press briefing held in Osogbo on Monday. Bisi explained that the internal turmoil within the national hierarchy has made it impossible to proceed with the statutory processes required for the primaries.
Governor Adeleke Cleared for Primaries
Chairman Bisi first clarified Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke’s position. He stated that the Governor had met all requirements for participating in the primary election. According to Bisi, “His Excellency purchased and submitted the expression of interest and nomination forms. This was done within the stipulated window.”
Bisi added, “He was screened and cleared without reservations. A Certificate of Clearance was also issued to him in line with party procedures.”
National Crisis Halts Congresses
The chairman highlighted the escalating crisis. He noted it was marked by “the suspension and counter-suspension of key national officers.” This situation, he explained, crippled the party’s ability to conduct crucial ad-hoc ward and local government congresses. These congresses were slated for November 24 and 29.
“These are the very congresses where delegates to the primaries are elected,” Bisi stressed. He also mentioned that several disputes are now before courts across the country. Without delegates, he concluded, holding a proper primary election is impossible.
The state party chairman then declared, “Given these circumstances, it has become inevitable and unavoidable. The PDP governorship primaries, initially set for Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025, can no longer hold as scheduled.”
Adeleke May Withdraw From Race
In a significant revelation, Bisi stated that Governor Adeleke might withdraw from the race if the crisis persists. Governor Adeleke is currently the only aspirant who has purchased and submitted nomination forms.
Bisi disclosed, “The information at my disposal suggests Governor Ademola Adeleke may no longer be interested in seeking the PDP nomination. This applies to the 2026 Osun Gubernatorial Election.” He added a condition: “Unless a resolution recognized by INEC is reached within the INEC timeline.”
Efforts Towards Resolution
Despite the challenges, the PDP chairman assured party members of ongoing efforts to resolve the impasse. “We assure you that the leadership of the party, at both state and national levels, is working tirelessly,” he said.
He confirmed these efforts are aimed at ensuring “a lawful, workable, and timely resolution to the challenges at hand.” Bisi concluded by stating the briefing was part of the party’s commitment to transparency. It aims to keep Osun residents well-informed.
